Head to Garrison Bay, named after the British military camp that was established here during a border dispute between England and the US. You can walk the camp's pear orchard and ornamental gardens and perhaps make the 3.2-mile round-trip hike to the top of Young Hill, which offers a panoramic view across Haro Straits to the southern tip of Vancouver Island and on to the Olympic Mountains. How they got here is an interesting story. In the 1960s, the island was renamed “Safari Island” and exotic game animals were imported for hunters who paid to hunt animals from around the world without having to leave their own time zone. However, the island was closed to hunting shortly after San Juan residents protested finding bullet holes in their homes! The animals remained on the island and today, many can be seen grazing on the grassy southwestern slopes. Continue on to Stuart Island, which has its own small flock of wild mouflon sheep, descendants of a few brave sheep who swam from Speiden to the greener shores of Stuart. This is a good place to kayak along the fir- and madrone-covered cliffs that line the harbor. There is an option to hike the 6-mile roundtrip trail out to the Turn Point Lighthouse, the most northwesterly place in the continental US, as well as other hikes accessible from the state park dock in Reid Harbor. The weather in the San Juan Islands in September is favorable and boots may not becessary however, If the need arises and you would like to use these boots, please submit your shoe size(s) if you have not already done so. \nWEATHER AND GEAR:<\/strong> Temperatures may range from a low in the upper 30s \nat night to a possible high of 70 degrees on sunny days. Several things on the list will also prepare you for rain. While we would love to have sunshine the whole trip, you should be ready for \na variety of conditions. If you're dressed appropriately, the weather is always perfect. <\/body>","Custom_FB_Additional_Notes_-_MISC_1":"GENERAL BOAT INFORMATION:<\/strong>\nCell phones work in some areas while in SE Alaska, as well as in the main towns, but don't count on them to work all the time. \nThe boat has regular 110 electrical outlets and in each cabin. We suggest you don't bring hair dryers, as you will be limited in your use of them. The Captain does not run the generator at night to maintain silence. Electricity is still available at night, but we're on batteries at that time. If you use a CPAP Machine, please bring a battery back-up. \n
PROHIBITED ITEMS<\/strong> \nWeapons, illegal drugs and other items that could interfere with the safe operation of the ship \nor the safe and secure environment of our guests and crew are prohibited.
\nDRONES<\/strong> Drones may be deployed in areas where their usage is permitted, in accordance with Federal law and at the discretion of the ship's crew. Drones may not interfere with the safe operation of the ship or any of the activities.
\nDIETARY RESTRICTIONS<\/strong>: If you have not already done so, please let us know any dietary restrictions you may have (if you are a vegetarian, etc.). While it may be difficult to ensure a wide variety of foods to meet your specific needs, we will advise the chef of your desires and do our best to assist you. If you do have restrictions, please bring along a supplemental supply of foods that you like to eat.<\/div>
Beer and wine are provided, however, you can bring your own beeer, wine or liquor onboard if you wish. Water, teas, juices, sodas and coffee are available throughout the day. \n
SMOKING:\nParticipants may not smoke below decks or within any enclosed area of the vessel. Smoking is allowed on the leeward rail only. \n
\nBEARS: Alaska is an active habitat for Grizzly and Black bears during the summer months. They are usually seen from a distance of 30 to 40 feet mostly from the boat or kayaks. Your guides carry bear spray and will hold a shore and safety briefing upon embarkation. Clients are not advised to bring their own bear spray.
\nPACK CREEK VIEWING AREA: Weather permitting you will visit the Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area located in the northeast corner of Admiralty Island. This is a Wilderness Area which means there are no facilities on site, including no bathrooms or shelter from the elements. Pack Creek is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.
\nTo protect the bears and yourself, permits are required to limit the number visitors. Food and excess items are prohibited and visitors are required to stay together, refrain from sudden movements and loud noises in the Pack Creek viewing area. From Bellingham, board the ship and head south to Cypress Island for a picturesque hike through old-growth forests. Morning kayaking expeditions allow you to search for whales, orcas, and dolphins at water-level as eagles fly overhead.

Days 1-5 (5 nights)
The 75-foot research vessel is a historic wooden boat that accommodates up to 12 guests. Constructed in 1932 as a marine research boat, she can maneuver around icebergs, follow whales, get close to glaciers, and tuck into tiny coves that most passenger vessels wouldn't even dream of approaching. Delicious meals, including freshly-caught seafood, are served by the chef in the warm, wood-paneled salon, and a fleet of kayaks (six doubles and three singles) on board add to the spirit of exploration and discovery.
We are delighted to invite you aboard this unique and historic 86-foot wooden vessel. A “gentleman's yacht” designed specifically for exploration, she is ideal for discovering the wonders of Alaska, San Juan Islands, and the Sea of Cortez. You'll find a lovely wood-paneled salon aboard—a great space where you can unroll the charts and share the route you've explored that day and discuss the adventures that lie ahead. There is a spacious covered back deck, the ultimate spot for watching marine life (think whales, seals, and more!你放松手里拿着一杯饮料. You won't believe the meals that the on-board chef produces from the galley, including fresh-baked goods and wonderful fish from the bounty of the surrounding seas.
This trip is Level 1+, Easy to Moderate, according to our trip grading system. You'll explore remote coastlines and island by day, then enjoy the comfort of the ship in the evening for good food, fine company, and a comfortable cabin. With just a few hours of cruising each day, there is plenty of time for walking, wildlife watching, or sea kayaking all in the company of an on-board naturalist who shares insights into the local botany, natural history, and native culture. The three hikes average 3-5 miles each, round trip.
No previous kayaking experience is required. Unlike whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking skills can be learned quickly and easily. The waters kayaked in are protected from the open ocean and are generally calm. It is not the intention to kayak on stormy days or when sea conditions are truly "rough" with high winds and waves (such occasions are infrequent in these waters during the summer). Nevertheless, unpredictability is the rule for the weather in this region, and good kayaking weather throughout cannot be guaranteed. And with such a comfortable "mother ship," you can always opt out of any kayaking or hiking to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and the great views from on board.
Be prepared for temperatures ranging from the 50sF to 70sF. The San Juan Islands have a marine climate, which means rain is to be expected at some point on every trip. The rain itself is often a gentle mist, casting an aura of magic and mystery over the land. We hope for sunshine most of the time, but recommend that you plan for wet, cool weather just in case. You will be comfortable as long as your rain gear is adequate!
You should be ready for a variety of weather conditions. Layered clothing works best in the changing weather conditions typical of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Layers are easier to pack and more versatile than a single heavy coat. Don't bring down jackets or ski clothes (they don't dry well in the damp climate). Good rain gear is essential; it will enable you to remain comfortable in the wind or rain. Bring your high rubber boots (or use the ones provided on board) for wading and for use in the kayaks and small boats (you will wear these everywhere you go).
Meals onboard are elegant, locally sourced, and artfully presented. Fresh ingredients come from local providers whenever possible, including organic farmers, and fish is bought directly from local fishers. Complimentary beer and wine is offered on board. You are welcome to bring any special wines, liquors, and mixers you enjoy. Soft drinks, coffee, and tea are always available.

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.
Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.
Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin, are Trip Level 3.

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

\nBOOTS AND CLOTHING:<\/strong> The boat has a selection of high rubber boots in common sizes which can be used for wading, hiking and use in the skiff and kayaks if necessary. The weather in the San Juan Islands in September is favorable and boots may not becessary however, If the need arises and you would like to use these boots, please submit your shoe size(s) if you have not already done so. We recommend thick socks or insoles for comfort. For a complete packing list, please refer to your Pre-Departure Notes.
\nWEATHER AND GEAR:<\/strong> Temperatures may range from a low in the upper 30s \nat night to a possible high of 70 degrees on sunny days. Several things on the list will also prepare you for rain. While we would love to have sunshine the whole trip, you should be ready for \na variety of conditions. If you're dressed appropriately, the weather is always perfect. <\/body>","Custom_FB_Additional_Notes_-_MISC_1":"GENERAL BOAT INFORMATION:<\/strong>\nCell phones work in some areas while in SE Alaska, as well as in the main towns, but don't count on them to work all the time. We do not have internet service. There is coverage in the San Juan Islands, but the signal may bounce off Canadian cell towers, watch out for international roaming.
\nThe boat has regular 110 electrical outlets and in each cabin. We suggest you don't bring hair dryers, as you will be limited in your use of them. The Captain does not run the generator at night to maintain silence. Electricity is still available at night, but we're on batteries at that time. If you use a CPAP Machine, please bring a battery back-up. \n
PROHIBITED ITEMS<\/strong> \nWeapons, illegal drugs and other items that could interfere with the safe operation of the ship \nor the safe and secure environment of our guests and crew are prohibited.
\nDRONES<\/strong> Drones may be deployed in areas where their usage is permitted, in accordance with Federal law and at the discretion of the ship's crew. Drones may not interfere with the safe operation of the ship or any of the activities.
\nDIETARY RESTRICTIONS<\/strong>: If you have not already done so, please let us know any dietary restrictions you may have (if you are a vegetarian, etc.). While it may be difficult to ensure a wide variety of foods to meet your specific needs, we will advise the chef of your desires and do our best to assist you. If you do have restrictions, please bring along a supplemental supply of foods that you like to eat.<\/div>
Beer and wine are provided, however, you can bring your own beeer, wine or liquor onboard if you wish. Water, teas, juices, sodas and coffee are available throughout the day. \n
SMOKING:\nParticipants may not smoke below decks or within any enclosed area of the vessel. Smoking is allowed on the leeward rail only. \n
\nBEARS: Alaska is an active habitat for Grizzly and Black bears during the summer months. They are usually seen from a distance of 30 to 40 feet mostly from the boat or kayaks. Your guides carry bear spray and will hold a shore and safety briefing upon embarkation. Clients are not advised to bring their own bear spray.
\nPACK CREEK VIEWING AREA: Weather permitting you will visit the Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area located in the northeast corner of Admiralty Island. This is a Wilderness Area which means there are no facilities on site, including no bathrooms or shelter from the elements. Pack Creek is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.
\nTo protect the bears and yourself, permits are required to limit the number visitors. Food and excess items are prohibited and visitors are required to stay together, refrain from sudden movements and loud noises in the Pack Creek viewing area. Trip members are responsible for transferring from the airport (or hotel if you have booked extra nights prior to the trip) to the dock on Day 1. The boat will be docked a Squalicum Harbor but exact moorage location may vary for each departure; please call the boat at 360-298-1661 the morning of departure to confirm the exact location.<\/div>
You are welcome to board the boat at 1:30PM. After helping you get your bags on board and showing you to your cabin, there will be a short presentation regarding safety procedures before you cast off around 2:00PM.<\/div>
